Gwyn Brookes ~ Resume (Technical Writing)

Digital Equipment Corporation (UK) Limited (04/89 - 09/96)
Technical Writer/Author

Projects worked on during research, design and creation of technical documentation included:

The styles used to produce technical reference books included Information Mapping, Quick Reference and User Guides. Software tools used for writing included VAX Document and MS Word/Office Suite Tools. Some of these technical documents were also designed as part of a course - and many of the courses I have developed could cross over into this area because of their technical nature.

ALL-IN-1 Migration

A detailed technical book and video produced for Digital Equipment Corporation showing system engineers or managers how to migrate their ALL-IN-1 mail messaging system from Message Router to using MAILbus 400 message transport and Digital X500 Directory Service; produced using Information Mapping style.

The book and video were produced using MS Word in modular format to allow direct and appropriate access to the engineers depending on their knowledge, experience and need. Extensive research and cooperation with system engineers and developers was required for this project.

Paradox Database

Technical documentation of a Paradox database system (used to monitor, update and report on the leasing/renting/maintenance and supervision of government owned properties) including a detailed analysis recording the workings of each individual programming procedure used in the database. Produced using MS Word for Charlton Computing Consultants (now part of the Amey Vectra group).

Digital Consultant's Kit

Editing, updating, re-organization and compilation of existing materials to produce the Digital Consultants Kit. This was a comprehensive manual for Digital consultants to use in their negotiations with customers relating to available services and products. Produced using Information Mapping style and MS Word.

DPLNS

Development, design and publishing of three paper-based documents for DPLNS (Denied Parties List Name Screening).  DPLNS is part of the compliance area for Digital Equipment Corporation. The three documents developed were:
  • User Guide for administrators of the DPLNS database system;
  • Quick Reference Guide for DPLNS access and manipulation of information in the database;
  • Technical Guide for the database technical support team.

I also helped in the organization of a 2-day training workshop for administrative and technical support staff. These documents were produced using VAX Document.
