Gwyn Brookes ~ Resume (Course Development)

Digital Equipment Corporation (UK) Limited (04/89 - 09/96) and
Global Knowledge Network (GKN) (09/96 - 11/96)
Course Developer/Writer/Project Manager

Several projects were worked on to design, write and create courseware in various formats:

The styles of courseware developed included Self Paced Instruction, Reference books, Lecture Lab Trainer and User Guides. During my contracts at Digital Equipment Corporation and Global Knowledge Network, I researched, designed, developed and had published several courses (listed above and detailed below). These were all written in MS Word using specific design templates that involved a lot of 'fiddling' with the page format, page numbering and indexing aspects of that application. For Digital especially, the format of the courseware had to comply with corporate requirements and standards before submission to a central repository in the US was acceptable - and if the postscript version you submitted could not be easily printed onto the standard courseware paper, then the whole process had to be revisited!

Most of the courses were over 100 pages of text and diagrams, facilitator and user notes. MS Word had a hard time coping with the size and complexities of these files!  However, using a word-processing/desktop publishing package was much easier and faster than the old mark-up language and compiler system used when I first started course development and writing.

Vendor Management

Extensive research and development of information for inclusion in a course/workshop Vendor Management Training. This was a joint US/UK project to produce a course consisting of four elements:
  • SPI on assessing the need for outsourcing and the types available;
  • Two-day workshop on writing specifications for the service to be outsourced, assessing and selecting vendors;
  • CBT on vendor service measurement, including guidance for unsatisfactory delivery of service and interactive exercises to aid service measurement;
  • Workshop on Partnering, selecting key vendors and improving the working relationship between customer and vendor.

This course was produced for Digital using VAX Document.

DEC/EDI (Electronic Data Interchange)

Production of 4 new DEC/EDI courses for a PC-based EDI system.

The 4 courses were very technical in nature, dealing with the configuration of both the server and the EDI software, setting up mapping information within the software and using EDI.

A tutorial flowing through the 4 courses was included. It provided all steps necessary for the student to set up the electronic interchange of a document from start to finish.

These courses were produced for Digital using MS Word and involved extensive use of screen captures and flow diagrams to explain the various steps in setting up and using EDI. I worked closely with engineers and software developers to complete this project successfully.

Just Enough

Three SPI's (Self Paced Instruction booklets) produced for Digital to give 'Just Enough' information about ALL-IN-1, Digital X.500 Directory Service and MAILbus 400.  These booklets included a lot of techincal information and were designed to be used by system managers and engineers in conjunction with the ALL-IN-1 Migration documentation (see the entry under Technical Writing area).

The development of these three booklets involved extensive research and gathering of information from software engineers and developers. Produced using MS Word.

Management in the 90s

A European Manufacturing & Customer Services-based workshop detailing the problems, methods and suggested solutions for managing a flexible and variable workforce in the 90s. This included guidance on managing contract staff and remote/tele workers. Produced for Digital using MS Word.

MS Office Courses (Global Knowledge Network)

Four short courses, written to a very defined specification for an audience in Singapore. The courses covered MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access. These courses included all necessary instruction for the user to complete at least one document/database/spreadsheet in each of these applications. Produced using MS Word.

Updating Courseware

Updating, editing and electronic submission to a central repository in the US of 12 Digital internal courses for Manufacturing & Customer Services; management of translation of sensitive management materials into French and German; organization and management of roll-out training across Europe. Produced using MS Word.
